Progress: Kilgore accent claims are “hogwash.”

The conservative Charlottesville Daily Progress will be running this editorial in Thursday’s paper, and it includes this bit:

The Kilgore camp claimed that Mr. Kaine is holding the Republican former attorney general’s accent up to ridicule and is also thereby somehow demeaning the accents of many rural Virginia residents.

Hogwash. Mr. Kaine has never said any such thing, although he continues to chide Mr. Kilgore for ducking opportunities and invitations for honest debate.

Mr. Kilgore can put “Accent-gate” to bed by agreeing to a series of six or more debates across Virginia.

Hogwash, indeed.

Kilgore has failed to answer the only question that Tim Kaine has raised along these lines so far: Why won’t Jerry Kilgore speak for himself?

If the Daily Progress is turning on Kilgore, that’s not a good sign for the campaign. See my November 1 2004 piece on Media General’s endorsements to understand why this is noteworthy.

You bet they’re conservative. I can’t think of a single Democrat they’ve endorsed in an opposed race. They even endorsed Kenneth “Mr. Stabby” Jackson for City Council, who was convicted of multiple cases of attacking people with knives. I think they said something about the value of somebody who understands the justice system.
